Sandham Symes (born in Ireland in 1807 to Sandham Symes, a solicitor, and Barbara Warren) was an architect by profession, and was noted for the design of many well-known buildings in Ireland. He was also a very accomplished artist and a well-travelled man with eclectic interests. One of his finest collections of drawings and paintings that form part of this legacy are those originating from the period of time he spent in America and Canada in 1841 and 1880, which this book concerns itself with. Within this collection, Sandham visually captures his experiences of travelling from Ireland to new York, as well as his time spent in various locations in America and Canada.
