The 'celebrated Mr. Rocque', Chorograher to the Prince of Wales, arrived in Dublin in 1754 with an international reputation already established by his large-scale maps of London, Paris, Rome, and several English counties. One of his greatest undertakings during a busy six-year stay in Ireland was to map the capital city, together with its suburbs and hinterland in considerable detail. Published at his shop in Batchelor's Walk, John Rocque's two maps of the city and county of Dublin are probably his greatest achievement by way of accuracy, design and presentation. Beautiful in their own right, they are now an invaluable source for the history of Dublin.
